How to properly measure zip-screens for windows - a complete guide

Variants of mounting
Before proceeding with the measurements, we need to determine the method of installation. We have three basic options:
1. Installation over the window opening
This is a less frequently chosen solution, used mainly when:
- We have limited space in the light of the window
- We want to keep the full light of the window
- The facade allows for an aesthetic installation above the window
2. Installation in the light of the window opening
This is the most popular solution that we can do in two ways:
a) Facing with the facade - the cassette is flush with the facade of the building
b) Alignment with the window - the cassette is retracted and flush with the plane of the window
Step-by-step measurement process
1. Width measurement:
- Measure the width in at least three places: at the top, in the middle and at the bottom of the hole
- Write down the smallest dimension - this will be the base width
- Subtract 4mm (2mm on each side) for mounting tolerance
2. Height measurement:
- Measure the height on both sides and in the center of the hole
- Save Smallest Dimension
- Include space for cassette and bottom bar
Selection of the size of the cartridge
When choosing a cartridge, we are guided by the following rules:
- We always choose the smallest possible cassette that will accommodate the fabric - the smaller cassette is less visible and looks better on the facade
- If a larger cassette is required on one large window, we apply the same size on all windows in the same plane of the building - this will ensure architectural consistency
Important technical details
Cable routing:
- For zip-screens with an electric motor, the cable outlet side must be marked
- With solar zip-screens, there is no need to plan cable routing
Mounting Tolerances:
- The maximum allowable tolerance is 2 mm
- With larger deviations, there may be problems with the operation of the system
Measurement form
For each window it is necessary to write:
1. Dimensions:
- Width (with 3 measurements)
- Height (with 3 measurements)
- Final dimensions after subtracting tolerances
2. Assembly Details:
- Mounting type (above the opening/in the light)
- Facing method (with facade/with window)
- Cartridge size
- Motor/cable side
The most common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Not taking into account the unevenness of the walls - always measure in several places
- Mounting tolerances too small - follow the 2mm clearance rule on each side
- Different sizes of cassettes on the same facade - remember the architectural consistency
- Not taking into account the space for the mechanism - check the detailed dimensions in the catalog
